Sports briefs: Memphis player shot, killed

The Memphis football team will play its game today against Marshall despite the fatal shooting of junior defensive lineman Taylor Bradford, 21, on Sunday. Police believe Bradford was targeted and Memphis canceled classes Monday. University president Shirley Raines said witnesses told police they saw more than one person fleeing the scene.

Discus legend Oerter dies at 71

Al Oerter, who became one of the all-time greats by winning discus gold medals in four straight Olympics, died of heart failure in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., two weeks after turning 71. Oerter won gold medals in 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968. Oerter and Carl Lewis are the only track and field stars to capture the same event in four consecutive Olympics. Oerter, however, is the only one to set an Olympic record in each of his victories.
