Sports briefs: Los Gatos' Allen suspended

Former Los Gatos High School star Jared Allen has been suspended by the NFL for the first two games of the upcoming season. Allen has been arrested twice this offseason on DUI charges. Allen previously said he was suspended four games, but he has entered a diversion program on the first charge and pleaded no contest to the second.

Kendall dealt to Cubs

The writing has been on the wall ever since the A’s said they wanted Mike Piazza to put on the catching gear again. While that experiment is still up in the air, Jason Kendall’s future is not. The veteran catcher, who has a .298 career batting average but is at just .226 this year, was traded to the Chicago Cubs. The A’s receive catcher Rob Bowen, who was dealt by San Diego to the Cubs for Michael Barrett, and minor-league left-hander Jerry Blevins. Kurt Suzuki becomes the A’s No. 1 catcher, with Bowen the backup. "This also gives Jason an opportunity to get into what he relished when he got over here, which was to be with a team that is right there knocking on the door," A’s general manager Billy Beane said. "I think it’s a place he’ll thrive in and people there in Chicago will also identify with a guy like Jason."
