Sports briefs: Longtime Sharks scout dies of cancer 

Former NHL player and general manager John Ferguson Sr. after a lengthy fight with prostate cancer. He was 68. Ferguson was one of the toughest players to lace up skates in the NHL and remained a big part of the sport as a GM, coach and scout at the highest level. Ferguson was a senior scout for the Sharks from 1995 until his death. "John Ferguson was one of the most beloved figures to ever represent the Sharks, as well as the entire National Hockey League," Sharks GM Doug Wilson said in a statement.

July sweeps rock Bay Area teams

The euphoria of having the All-Star Game in the Bay Area’s own backyard has fizzed out quickly as the reality of the second half of the season arrived in rough fashion. Dave Roberts, right, and the Giants dropped a disappointing 5-3 loss to the rival Dodgers while Eric Chavez and the A’s left Minnesota with a 4-3 loss to the Twins. Both teams were swept over the weekend.
