Sports briefs: Legarza off to Miami (Ohio)

St. Ignatius forward-center Vince Legarza has committed to play college basketball at Miami (Ohio). Legarza worked hard this summer to improve his athleticism and the range on his jump shot. "I’m really excited," Legarza said. "It’s a great campus and a great school and it seemed like I could fit in well with the guys on the team and what they’re trying to do."

Smith will suit up, but Dilfer will start

Niners quarterback Alex Smith is healthy enough to suit up for Sunday’s game against the Giants. But backup Trent Dilfer will be the one under center. Dilfer will get his second straight start, a decision coach Mike Nolan made after watching two days of practice with his quarterbacks. Smith didn’t participate in some drills Wednesday while Dilfer took most of the first-team snaps Thursday while Smith watched with the coaches. "It’s disappointing," Smith said. "I’ve been with this team for a while now, and to see another guy in your huddle, it’s a strange feeling."
