Sports briefs: Carter up to No. 4 after win

Senior forward Dominique Carter poured in a career-high 32 points to move into fourth place on the USF women’s basketball scoring list as the Dons rolled past San Jose State 74-51 at War Memorial Gymnasium. She also had six rebounds and five assists to help the Dons improve to 6-4. Carter surpassed Carey Sauer (1,443) and Sue Corder (1,451) and has 1,475 points.

Cal is overpowered by K-State freshmen

Cal’s talented big men found a younger and probably more dynamic duo that was too tough to handle. Bill Walker had 30 points and 10 rebounds and fellow freshman forward Michael Beasley overcame a quiet first half to hit big shots down the stretch as the Kansas State men’s basketball team handed the Golden Bears their first loss, an 82-75 decision in Manhattan, Kan. Sophomore Ryan Anderson had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead Cal (6-1), but most of his damage came in the first half.
