Sports briefs: Butch van Breda Kolff dies

Butch van Breda Kolff, who won more than 700 games as a coach at the college and pro levels, has died after a lengthy illness. He was 84. Van Breda Kolff took the Los Angeles Lakers to two NBA Finals during his 10 years as an NBA and ABA coach (287-316). He also went 482-272 in 28 seasons in college at Cornell, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine and St. Bonaventure.

Beckham in squabble

There is nothing like a little controversy to bring a little extra attention. Just when it seemed like the David Beckham, spotlight was dimming to typical MLS standards, the British import got into an altercation. Jesse Marsch of Chivas USA ran up behind Beckham during injury time at the end of the first half and kicked the Los Angeles Galaxy captain in the upper right hip. Beckham, just 48 hours after playing a full match for England in a friendly, ran up to Marsch and started screaming in his face. The two were separated, with Beckham swinging his arm when the referee tried to pull him away. Both teams started shoving one another and Chivas USA defender Alex Zotinca headbutted Galaxy midfielder Kevin Harmse.
