Sports briefs: Bay Bombers to play at Cow Palace 

Roller Derby’s resurgence in the Bay Area has opened a new venue for the San Francisco Bay Bombers. The team announced that two games next month will be played at the venerable Cow Palace in Daly City. The Bay Bombers, who usually play their home games at Kezar Pavilion, will face the Brooklyn Red Devils on July 7 and the Chicago Pioneers on July 14 at the Cow Palace.

The Bombers will also hold tryouts July 2-15. For info about the tryouts, contact general manager Jim Fitzgerald at jim_f_94080@yahoo.com.

Former USF star Russell in FIBA Hall

Bill Russell, the centerpiece of the dominant USF men’s basketball teams of the mid-1950s who went on to win 12 NBA championships and one Olympic gold medal, has been elected to the FIBA Hall of Fame. Russell, who led the Dons to NCAA titles in 1955 and ’56 (named Most Outstanding Player in ’55) will be enshrined along with 11 other players and four coaches and four others in the international Hall on Sept. 12 in Madrid, Spain, as part of the 75th anniversary class.
