Regional officials have declared Wednesday a Spare the Air day, the 13th such day already this winter season.

As a result, the use of fireplace, outdoor fire pits or wood burning stoves, is illegal, due to high particulate matter in the air. According to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which decides on declaring Spare the Air days, there are 1.4 million fireplaces and wood burning stoves in the region, and they account for about one-third of the potentially dangerous particulate matter in the Bay Area.

The winter Spare the Air season lasts from Nov. 1 to Feb. 29.
