Southern California enjoys warm-up

Southern California is enjoying a midwinter warm-up with temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s.

The National Weather Service says downtown Los Angeles topped out Wednesday at 78, well above the normal of 68 degrees for the date.

Meteorologists say the warmth is the result of high pressure aloft that will build over California through Thursday.

The condition has also brought some gusty northerly flow of air.

Forecasters say the ridge will begin moving to the southwest on Friday and high pressure will build over the surface of the Great Basin, causing slight cooling and bringing the potential for moderate-to-strong Santa Ana winds during the weekend.
