South City students remember classmate at prom

South San Francisco High School’s senior prom provided students an opportunity to come together and support one another after the recent death of a classmate, school officials said.

Senior Jeremy Ison, 17, became the fourth South San Francisco High School student — and the second member of the senior class — to die in 2007, when a car in which he was a passenger crashedFriday night on El Camino Real.

The incident marred Saturday’s senior prom for students, and more support staff was brought to the dance to help console attendees, school officials said.

School Interventions Counselor Rebecca Bucher said it was a "kind of somber event, but it was also maybe a great way for the kids to be there together and support each other."

Ison’s death has taken its toll on teachers as well, and the school is looking into a variety of ways to commemorate him, Bucher said.

Ison died when the 2004 Pontiac GTO he was riding in crashed on the 1400 block of El Camino Real at roughly 9 p.m. Everyone in the car was 17 years old, and Ison was pronounced dead on the scene. The male driver and another male passenger were taken to San Francisco General Hospital and put in the intensive-care unit, according to police.

The female passenger was treated and released while the other two passengers are currently improving, Sgt. Paul Ritter of South San Francisco police said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, he added.

Seventeen-year-old senior Antwanisha Morgan was shot and killed March 16 while standing with friends on Third Street near Quesada Avenue in San Francisco’s Bayview district.

On Jan. 13, Josue Zendejas, 16, a former student who moved to Hayward last October with his family, was killed in an accident involving a drunken driver.

On Jan. 20, Stella Blue Kraft, a 16-year-old junior at the school, died in a car accident when the car she was riding in crashed on Interstate 80.

Witnesses to Friday night’s accident should call (650) 829-3934.
