South City man accused of rape in court

The trial of a South City auto body worker accused of hunting down and sexually assaulting four joggers is set to begin Monday, prosecutors said.

Raul Gutierrez Contreras, 33, is charged with multiple counts in connection to four separate attacks on female joggers in South City in 2006 and 2007.

In one attack, Contreras allegedly crawled under the stall of a bathroom in Orange Park in an attempt to rape a jogger, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Contreras faces life in prison if convicted of the rape spree.

Contreras remains in custody on $700,000 bail.
