South African named head of global editors' group

A global editors' organization says a South African journalist is the first woman to lead it.

In a statement Wednesday, the Paris-based World Editors Forum said its new executive director is Cherilyn Ireton, who has been a senior manager at some of South Africa's top newspapers.

The 18-year-old organization provides an international forum on newsroom management, press freedom and other issues.

Ireton worked at South Africa's Sunday Times and Business Day. For the past six years she has been a London-based media consultant.
