Sometimes it pays to be in grade school

Teachers and students in The City’s unified school district are getting some perks outside the classroom come January.

When the new year starts, the San Francisco Zoo will open a three-month window for all San Francisco Unified School District teachers to sign up for a full year of free membership.

The self-proclaimed “Living Classroom’’ already offers free admission to The City’s students.

BART also announced that on Jan. 18, it will offer 13,000 free rides for students and 1,300 free rides for their chaperones over the course of five weeks.

Since a pilot program that launched Dec. 7 with 2,000 free rides was so popular, BART extended it with a $50,000 donation from American Express.

The rides will be first come, first serve and can be retrieved at www.bart.gov/fieldtrips.

Or if students want to stay in The City, they can always flash their IDs at the Asian Art Museum.
