SoMa landstrip to become park

The park-deprived South of Market neighborhood will be getting a small patch of green in its midst.

The Department of Public Works is working with a SoMa neighborhood group to create a street park at 6th and Brannan Streets. The plot of land belongs to CalTrans, but the state agency has agreed to allow the City and neighborhood group to turn it into a park, said Public Works spokeswoman Christine Falvey.

The long and narrow strip of land is adjacent to the 6th Street off-ramp from Highway 280. Irrigation, pathways and landscaping will be installed. The Public Works department has posted photos of the ongoing work on their flickr account, and linked to those photos on their twitter feed.

They estimate the work will be done by early February.
