Solar powered ‘BigBelly’ trash cans chomp trash at Dolores Park

It’s been almost a year since Rec and Park chief Phil Ginsburg ran a marathon to raise money for simple ways to improve The City’s parks shortly after he was appointed.

And now he’s ready to roll out the red carpet for one of six projects benefiting from the money raised.

It’s a BigBelly solar-powered trash compactor that has already been installed at Dolores Park, and Ginsburg is going to make its grand presentation within the next week at a news conference.

The name’s a little deceiving; it sounds like it’s an oversized trash can, but it’s the same size as a regular one. However, it’s supposed to hold five times more waste than a noncompacting can.

First stop, solar trash chomper, next are doggy relief stations.
