Smooching lovers in Tenderloin interrupted by beefy robbers

A couple that had just kissed and made up from a lover's spat on a Tenderloin sidewalk Tuesday night were interrupted by a pair of violent crooks, police said.

A 29-year-old man was lying on the ground kissing his girlfriend when two thugs, a man and woman weighing a combined 500 pounds, assaulted him and snatched his wallet in the 300 block of Turk Street about 9:20 p.m., police said.

During the assault, the male suspect reached into the victim’s back pocket, lifted his wallet, then fled on foot with the other suspect west on Turk Street and south on Hyde, police said.

The victim suffered bumps to his head and a laceration over his right eye, injuries that are not life threatening, police said. No arrest was made as of Wednesday morning.

The lovers said they did not know their attackers, police Officer Albie Esparza said Wednesday. A neighbor who witnessed the attack confirmed their story, Esparza said. The male thug attacked "for no reason" and the female thug joined in, the victims told police.

Police are hunting for the suspects. One was a black man in his 40s, about 5-feet-8 and weighing some 300 pounds, Esparza said. He had brown hair and eyes and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, he said.

The other was a black woman in her 40s, about 5-feet-5, 200 pounds, wearing all black clothing, Esparza said.
