Smear politics for 2012 campaign go viral with fake websites

WHAT: Anonymous 2012 campaign smear websites are already infesting the Internet and proving to be a cheaper, easier and faster-spreading alternative to traditional forms of dirty political tactics.

HOW: Critics of President George W. Bush once manipulated Google search results so “miserable failure” led to his official White House page. A phony site for New York GOP House candidate Jane Corwin said, “Together we can make delicious soup from the bones of the poor.”

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: So far, the 2012 smear sites have been mostly nuisances. But if an accusation goes viral like the birthers’ push on President Barack Obama or the anti-Sen. John Kerry Swift Boat charges, it could drastically change the course of a campaign.
