Slant film fest brings Asian shorts to S.F.

There’s a new fest in town. Slant, which screens Asian American short films, is visiting from Houston, with 13 films at the 4 Star Theatre on Saturday and a DVD-release party tonight at the Kearny Street Workshop.

"Slant: Bold Asian American Images" is the brainchild of San Francisco Arts Commission project associate Melissa Hung, who also founded Hyphen magazine.

The festival, which presents an eclectic mix of Asian American cinema, has been running at the Aurora Picture Show in Houston for seven years. Hung, a native Texan who now lives in San Francisco, got a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts to bring the films to her new home city this year.

"Most of the [filmmakers] like to travel their shows," she said. "We focus on new films and emerging artists, so we want to give them exposure."

The 4 Star was a natural choice for the screenings. "It’s a great independent theater that has been very supportive of Asian American film," Hung said.

Slant’s future in San Francisco is not certain. It could be a first annual or a one-time stop.

"It depends on the funding," Hung said.

But for this year, one thing is certain. Hung promises "stereotype-smashing, rollicking off-beat comedies" as well as "heartwarming and heartbreaking family stories."
