Sierra Club's youth cleaning up Ocean Beach

Alicia Washkevich, operations manager of the Sierra Club’s Youth Programs, will be at Ocean Beach on Saturday to lead volunteer cleanup efforts. The event will coincide with the National Day of Service on Sept. 11.

Is the first cleanup effort organized to coincide with the National Day of Service? The Sierra Club has been doing these projects since we were created, and we’ve had other types of organizations, such as the Military Family Outdoors Program. But this is the first time we’ve tried to bring in all these campaigns together.

How dependent is conservation on volunteer efforts? Volunteering is very important for us, and I think the recent generation of Americans realizes this. There has been support across the nation for encouraging service.

What’s scheduled to happen Saturday? We’re just going to do a little beach clean. Volunteers can pick up litter and other forms of trash. It should be great for both our younger and older volunteers.

How many volunteers are expected to attend? We’re expecting have about 100, but everyone is welcome to show up. We’re going to have an opening ceremony with the national anthem, so it will be more than just cleaning up the beach.
