Sick zebra found dead after receiving treatment

As the San Francisco Zoo is under scrutiny for a fatal tiger mauling on Christmas Day, a zebra under medical observation since Sunday was found dead in a San Francisco Zoo barn Tuesday morning, according to officials.

A veterinarian conducting a check on the Grant’s zebra, named Lisa, found the animal dead at about 7:10 a.m.

Lisa had been under observation since she was seen salivating in the African Savanna exhibit. She was examined by a veterinarian, treated with common equine medicine, and put in her stall in the Hoofstock Barn, where she was found in the morning, zoo officials reported.

Officials expected to conduct a necropsy on the zebra sometime Tuesday, spokeswoman Lora LaMarca said. Initial results will likely not be known until today, she said.

Lisa was born in February 1998 and moved to the San Francisco Zoo one year later.
