Shoddy education: Military kids stuck in decrepit on-base schools

WHAT: Tens of thousands of U.S. military personnel children attend World War II-era military-base schools that are falling apart from neglect and violate the 1978 Defense Dependents’ Education Act, according to a Newsweek magazine investigation.

HOW BAD: Pentagon reports admit that nearly $4 billion is needed to upgrade worldwide base schools to minimum standards. About half the military’s schools are more than 45 years old, and as many as 75 percent are irreparable.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: This national disgrace is so little recognized that the media and even first lady Michelle Obama have been praising the military’s high-quality services for soldiers’ children during parents’ lengthy deployments.
