Shiva Rea on leading yoga in the Fillmore for Wanderlust

The world-renowned yoga teacher will be leading the second annual Wanderlust Festival May 21 at The Fillmore. The yoga will be accompanied by the music of Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. Yoga and music tickets are $55, while music-only tickets cost $25. Information can be found at

What can people expect from the evening? The experience of doing yoga inside The Fillmore. Last year, I was so blown away by the power inside it that is generated from all the amazing people like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix who have played there. The yoga gives people the opportunity to experience the power of being moved by breath and music. A 30-minute trance dance will be integrated.

What do you hope people will get out of it? Equal parts yoga and music. It’s a music and yoga festival that is becoming a Bay Area festival tradition. To achieve that in two years is amazing.

Why is yoga so popular in San Francisco? I see San Francisco as the progressive capital of the world. Yoga is part of their universal makeup and is a global phenomenon that crosses spiritual and cultural divisions. I think San Francisco is the leader of bringing evolutionary forms out to the world.
