Sham U: Local university president charged with student visa fraud 

WHAT: The president of Tri-Valley University, Susan Xiao-Ping Su, 41, of Pleasanton, was indicted by a federal grand jury on 33 counts of an alleged $3.2 million student visa fraud scheme.

WHY: Prosecutors called Tri-Valley a "sham" school that in two years fraudulently obtained student visas for at least 140 foreign students in exchange for millions in "tuition and fees."

HOW: Tri-Valley, now shuttered, had an East Bay campus but mostly offered online classes for foreign students — about 95 percent of them from India — who lived throughout the country.
