SFPD staff changes roles amid scandal

Police Chief George Gascón has shaken up the command staff of the department again.

In March, Gascón adjusted his top staff members, putting former Los Angeles Police Department colleague Assistant Chief Jeff Godown in charge of administration. That post oversees the crime lab, which has been rocked by the scandal of a former lab technician admitting she took drugs.

Now, Assistant Chief Kevin Cashman will fill the administrative roll. Cashman, however, was part of an e-mail exchange with the District Attorney’s Office in November when issues about the crime lab surfaced. There was no indication he did anything about the information he received.

The shake-up also resulted in the promotion of Capt. Denise Schmitt to commander. The former captain of Taraval Station, who raised the ire of medical marijuana advocates by saying dispensaries attract crime, will move to administrative services as well.
