SFPD second-in-command and Fong ally retires

Former police Chief Heather Fong’s right-hand man, Assistant Chief Jim Lynch, has called it a career.

Lynch, 54, spent much of his time on the Peninsula as an officer with the airport police before those officers merged with the SFPD in 1997. After serving as the department’s CFO for three years, Lynch was tapped by close friend Fong in early 2008 to be the second-highest paid officer in the department.

He was promoted with reform in mind but police Chief George Gascón appears to have taken over that role as he makes waves with change.

The 31-year veteran will likely take home a hefty pension — we’ll get back to you when we know how much — now that he’s part of what SFPD cops refer to fondly as the KMA club.
