SFPD awarded honors for “zone strategy”

The San Francisco Police Department won an award for fighting gun and gang crime with its “zone strategy,” a strategy implemented in the beginning of 2008 that basically dispatches more officers to areas with more crime.

The strategy has been touted as a major reason for a drastic decrease in homicides in 2009.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Achievement Award was given out to 24 agencies, individuals and nonprofits with innovative ideas to fight crime, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

“The San Francisco Police Department received the Outstanding Local Police Department Involvement Award for its innovative violence reduction strategy designed to direct a concerted enforcement effort in ‘hot spots’ in each of the 10 police districts in the city,” reads a press release.
