SF Zoo gorilla turns 1

A baby gorilla that was originally abandoned by his mother when he was born at the San Francisco Zoo will be celebrating his first birthday in December.

Hasani’s mother showed no attachment to him when he was first born, so zoo officials trained a surrogate mother to look after him.

The connection worked and now Hasani’s ready to celebrate his first birthday on December 8.

Zoo spokeswoman Lara LaMarca said he’ll get a big “ice cake," a block of carved ice.

Members are invited to the 9:30 a.m. celebration.
