S.F. woman hit by cable car, in stable condition

An elderly woman is in stable condition after being struck by a cable car in Chinatown on Saturday, officials said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was crossing against the light in the intersection of Mason Street and Pacific Avenue at 6:55 p.m. when a cable car on the Powell-Mason line hit her, pinning her left foot under the historic vehicle, Muni spokeswoman Janis Yuen said.

Firefighters dispatched to the scene transferred the woman to San Francisco General Hospital, where she was in stable condition as of Saturday night, a police operations officer said Sunday.

Yuen said buses replaced the cable car line for about two hours, and regular service was up and running by 9 p.m. The driver was transferred to a nondriving status, Yuen said, as is standard practice when there is a collision.
