S.F. State to host elite Division II wrestling tournament

For the fourth time in the school’s history, San Francisco State will host the NCAA Division II Super Regional 4/RMAC Wrestling Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day event will decide who from each of the 11 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference colleges will compete at the NCAA Division II Championships on March 11-12 in Kearney, Neb.

The Gators enter this weekend’s event sporting a 5-9 overall record with three wrestlers earning national NCAA Division II rankings, all under the tutelage of 27-year coach Lars Jensen.

Naveed Bagheri (141) leads the pack with a No. 2 ranking, while teammates Matt Thomas (149) and Josh Nolan (157) are ranked fourth and seventh, respectively.

Bagheri, a junior, has already claimed two RMAC 133-pound titles and earned All-America accolades his freshman year.

Four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for nationals in Nebraska, with the top three finishers qualifying automatically. If necessary, fourth-place matches will take place between the fourth and fifth placers to decide the last qualifier.

The event will also be streamed live via ustream.tv.
