SF State sending wheelchairs to Haiti

San Francisco State is sending rugged wheelchairs to assist thousands of people injured in the earthquake in Haiti.

The university’s Whirlwind Wheelchair program, which has existed for more than 20 years, designs and builds rugged, low-cost wheelchairs for developing countries.

Whirlwind’s factory in San Juan del Rio, Mexico is now producing a rush order of RoughRider wheelchairs, which are ideal for people in Haiti who now have lasting mobility impairments.

The chair uses off-road bicycle wheels and wide front caster wheels to make it easier to travel through mud and broken surfaces, according to the university.
