SF pursuit suspect remains hospitalized

A 20-year-old man who led police on a chase from the scene of a Bayview shooting to Oakland early Sunday morning remains hospitalized and was unable to appear in court Wednesday where his bail was set at $225,000.

Lipine Faafiu is hospitalized after his attempt to escape police with two others in the middle of the night ended when their maroon SUV crashed into a utility pole as it exited the freeway at Fruitvale Avenue in Oakland.

Before the police pursuit, the trio allegedly exchanged gunfire with the passengers of another car near Napoleon Street and Evans Avenue at 1:50 a.m. The car then headed over the Bay Bridge and into Oakland, where it crashed near train tracks. Faafiu was taken into custody at the scene of the wreck, but the other passengers got away.

Several law enforcement agencies searched the scene of the accident near railroad tracks, but police were unable to find the other two suspects. Before crashing, the trio ditched a handgun on the Bay Bridge. It was later recovered by police. Officers found shell casings at Evans Avenue and Rankin Street.

Faafiu is charged with assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, discharging a firearm at an inhabited enclosure, evading police and receiving or buying stolen property. Faafiu is expected to enter a plea Thursday morning before a San Francisco judge.

No victims were reported in the incident.
