Curbing street crimes: On Jan. 12, officers were assigned to a plainclothes detail tasked with curbing nightclub violence and property crimes that occur near nightclubs. One officer observed a man walking on 10th Street wearing gloves and pushing a shopping cart.

He was stopping at each car and looking inside the vehicles parked on the street. He then cut a hole in the rear back plastic window of a convertible.

The suspect reached inside the window and took a backpack and other items from the car. Officers determined that the suspect was already on parole for a similar offense.

Central

Financial District, Nob Hill, Chinatown, North Beach, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill

Caught red-handed: A concerned resident flagged down officers about a suspicious person rummaging through a parked car on the 700 block of Jones Street at 12:07 a.m. Jan. 14. The officers found the suspect still inside the car and placed him under arrest.

Several items, including the vehicle’s GPS device and a digital compass, were found in the suspect’s possession and later identified by the vehicle’s owner as stolen. A check of the suspect’s arrest history revealed that he had been arrested in the same area on Nov. 3 and 17, 2007, for suspicion of burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Northern

Pacific Heights, Marina, Japantown, Polk Gulch

Not a track star: A robbery with a gun was reported at the 100 block of Church Street at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 5. Other officers on the way to the scene observed a subject matching the description of the suspect.

As the officers approached him, he took off running. As the suspect ran, he discarded his clothing and evidence. The suspect, knowing he could not outrun the officers, gave up, and the officers took him into custody.

The officers recovered evidence including a loaded gun. The suspect was identified by the victims and the witnesses. The suspect was booked.
