S.F. Player of the Year: David Henderson

David Henderson took his time leaving Kezar Stadium, posing for pictures, signing programs and hugging family and friends.

On a sunny Thanksgiving Day, Henderson had just run for 242 yards and three touchdowns in Lincoln’s 49-0 San Francisco Section title game win over Washington. It was, as the Mustangs’ senior running back called it, "the last show," a fitting finale for The Examiner’s San Francisco Player of the Year.

"I don’t want to leave here — I wish I still had a few more quarters," Henderson said at the time. "Coach [Phil Ferrigno] told me to go out there, have fun and be me, so that’s what I did."

The 6-foot, 190-pounder topped The City with 2,310 yards and 29 touchdowns on 268 carries this year, leading a Lincoln team that went undefeated against Academic Athletic Association foes and won its third consecutive Turkey Bowl. His 5,592 career rush yards are the most in section history, according to CalHiSports.com. And he’s always had the unique and outsized personality to match his rare running gift, whether it was filling reporters’ notebooks with humorous quotes, creating celebratory dance routines on the sideline or applauding and helping up opponents who had just knocked him down.

"He’s a hysterical kid, a knucklehead," Ferrigno said. "And when he runs, he gets in the hole, swivels his hips, shifts gears and he’s gone. The scary thing is that David’s potential is still out there. He hasn’t even scratched it."

Henderson, who will likely decide on a college in the spring, ran for 200 or more yards four times this season. Three of those came against the AAA’s top two teams — in addition to the Turkey Bowl, he had 200 yards rushing and all four scores in the Mustangs’ 28-26 regular-season win over Washington and torched Lowell for 287 yards and three TDs on 17 carries in a 49-28 win.
