Dignity Health Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in Nob Hill is set to open the largest burn unit in Northern California early next year, a facility more than twice the size of its current burn center.

Crews in October broke ground for the new Bothin Burn Center on the fifth floor of St. Francis Memorial Hospital, which will include modern medical technology and equipment, including state-of-the-art life support, monitoring equipment and ultrasonic hydrotherapy for bathing wounds, hospital officials said Tuesday.

The 15,500-square-foot, $16 million burn unit will also feature 16 beds, six more than the current facility offers.

Larger treatment rooms, a patient gym and an operating room are also included in the upgrade. Additionally, the renovation features a family center equipped with a sound system, media outlets and a relaxation area.

"Given the many populations we serve, we have outgrown our current space and look forward to continuing to deliver top-quality, compassionate care to our patients in our new center," Dr. Jeffrey DeWeese, medical director of the Bothin Burn Center, said in a statement.

The Bothin Burn Center became the first burn unit to open west of the Rocky Mountains in 1967. Annually, more than 500 patients receive care at the center today, including some 70 children.

The center will remain open during construction of the new facility.
