Taara Hoffman, the executive director of GirlVentures, a San Francisco nonprofit offering diverse outdoor activity programming for girls with a focus on leadership and self-discovery, will hold a breakfast fundraiser Thursday at the Palace Hotel. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com.

How did you come to be involved in GirlVentures? I was looking to work on behalf of youth and loved the GirlVentures mission. The idea of girl empowerment and helping girls find their voices and inner strength really spoke to me.

Do you think outdoor excursions are crucial to youth development? Yes. We use kayaking, backpacking, camping and rock-climbing excursions as a means to explore deeper topics of self-expression, positive conflict resolution, identity and diversity. We expose many of these girls to the beauty of their own backyard for the first time.

What are some of the challenges facing adolescent girls today? In spite of the fact that “girl power” is a slogan, girls are under tremendous pressure to be thin, smart and popular, and the result is a disturbing loss of self-esteem. GirlVentures gets girls outside to show them a healthy relationship with their body.
