SF firefighters to offer health data for cancer study

It took a bit of arm-twisting, but the San Francisco Fire Department is now involved in what could be the most comprehensive study on cancer rates among firefighters to date.

The Department met with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health on St. Patrick’s Day to talk about collecting data for a study that will include 18,000 to 30,000 firefighters.

San Francisco joins Chicago and Washington, D.C., and possibly Philadelphia, in the study, which is expected to be completed in 2014. City firefighters are expected to participate in the study starting in the summer.
