S.F. crime-fighting tactics under review

As The City struggles with a rising murder rate and legislators grapple for more police officers in their districts, two laws passed last year that directly govern the operation of the Police Department are under review.

Legislation by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi mandating foot patrols in certain neighborhoods and legislation that would re-draw the boundaries of police districts were both passed as pilot programs last year. They are under review with the help of an outside consultant, the Public Safety Strategies Group.

Part of the review includes taking citizens’ input through surveys, which are available on the review Web site, at www.sfpolicereview.org. The deadline to fill out a survey is Oct. 8.
