The San Francisco Bay region has the fastest-growing population in the state, according to a report issued today by the California Department of Finance.

The report focuses on population growth throughout California in 2013.

Of the five California counties that are growing fastest, three are in the Bay Area. Santa Clara County topped the list with 1.5 percent population growth, followed closely by Alameda County. San Francisco's population grew by 1.3 percent.

According to the report, there has been housing growth to accommodate the population boom. San Francisco ranked fifth in a list of cities that have added the most housing units in 2013, with 2,377 new units. San Jose ranked third, with 3,578 new units.

San Francisco is currently on track to add even more units this year -- in the first quarter of 2014, The City added 2,123 housing units and is likely to surpass last year's total by the end of May.
