SF 49ers playoff tickets will be hard to catch

Fans hoping to attend the first 49ers playoff game since 2002 will have a chance to buy tickets next week, but they will have to act quickly if they want to claim those prized possessions.

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m., but there will only be limited seats available for fans who are not season-ticket holders.

The vast majority of the season-ticket holders have taken advantage of their opportunity to purchase home playoff tickets early, according to team spokesman Steve Weakland. Season-ticket holders have through today to make their priority order.

Because the team does not know how many season-ticket holders will buy playoff tickets, Weakland said Thursday that he could not estimate how many tickets would be available to the general public. The team does not release the number of its season ticket holders.

When the 49ers take to the field for their first playoff game depends on how things shake out against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

If the 49ers lose Sunday and the New Orleans Saints win, San Francisco will host a wild-card playoff game Jan. 7 or 8. If the 49ers win, they will receive a first-round bye and will host a divisional playoff game Jan. 15 or 16.

The team also will be offering special ticket packages that include access to a pregame tailgate party in Candlestick Park’s Grand Plaza.

The 49ers haven’t competed in a playoff game since Jan. 12, 2002, when they lost 31-6 in Tampa Bay to the Buccaneers.
