Settlement proposed for family of woman killed by falling tree limb

The family of a San Francisco woman killed by a falling tree branch in Stern Grove will find out Tuesday if The City approves a $650,000 settlement.

Kathleen Bolton, 50, was returning to her car April 14, 2008, after walking her dog in Stern Grove when a large limb of a redwood tree broke and struck her and the car. The woman’s parents sued The City, alleging negligence in inspecting and maintaining the city-owned tree.

The Board of Supervisors will vote on the proposed settlement Tuesday.

An outside agency described the tree as “in decline, with extensive dieback of large branches and significant structural defects which cannot be abated” in a January 2004 report commissioned by the Recreation and Park Department.
