SEIU seals deal on furloughs

The largest labor union in The City has ratified a deal that will cap the number of layoffs this year while saving The City millions of dollars.

Service Employees International Union Local 1021 joined other labor unions in approving a contract that includes 12 furlough days, or the equivalent of a 4.62 percent pay cut. The union approved the contract with 92 percent of the vote, according to Local 1021.

The concessions add up to a $200 million savings in the next two years, which will help The City close its $483 million budget shortfall for next fiscal year.

After Local 1021 refused to sign the contract, Mayor Gavin Newsom agreed to a deal that caps layoffs at 425.
