Security slip causes delays at Oakland airport

A man slipped past security screeners at Oakland International Airport on Tuesday, causing lengthy delays as federal officials and airport personnel searched all the terminals and airplanes for the man.

The man reportedly entered a restricted section of the airport’s main terminal using an exit lane near a security checkpoint, according to airport officials.

Authorities learned later that the man was not a security threat, but there was no official word on whether he was found. Lines were back to normal by late Tuesday afternoon.

Oakland International has been working under stricter security protocol, similar to San Francisco International Airport and Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport. The protocol also includes strict enforcement of drivers lingering curbside for pickup or drop-off, and towing if necessary, according to airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes.
