Second suspect in alleged funeral home fraud surrenders

A second man accused of bilking Bayview families out of pre-paid funeral expenses turned himself in to authorities Wednesday, according to prosecutors.

Donald Rollins, 56, of Fairfield, was arrested a day after prosecutors announced charges against him and his former boss, 38-year-old Derek Washington, of Oakland, who ran the now-defunct Funerals by Washington.

The men are accused of taking $30,000 from seven people between 2004 and 2009, and using the money illegally for business and other expenses. The funeral home went out of business in January 2009.

Both men are charged with multiple counts of grand theft and other felonies.

Washington pleaded not guilty to the charges today in San Francisco Superior Court, and Rollins is expected to be arraigned on the charges Thursday, district attorney’s office spokesman Seth Steward said.
