Search suspended for missing kayaker in San Francisco Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard called off its search Monday morning for a 55-year-old kayaker who overturned and went missing near Pier 80 on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Gregoire’s kayak capsized after getting caught up in a tugboat’s wake at about 2:40 p.m., according to San Francisco police and the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard used boats and a helicopter to search the area in and around the pier, but ended the search without finding Gregoire at about 9:30 a.m. The pier is located on The City’s Central Waterfront area near the Dogpatch neighborhood.

Police said Gregoire had gone with a small group of kayakers to Candlestick Point earlier in the day Sunday and were returning when the accident occurred.

Gregoire is a former San Francisco resident who now lives in Berkeley, according to police.
