SD man sentenced to prison for cancer center theft 

A Sioux Falls man accused of stealing $145,000 from a cancer treatment center has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The Argus Leader reports ( ) that 46-year-old Terry Portra Sr. embezzled the funds from the McHale Institute between January 2008 and January 2011. Authorities say other employees at the clinic noticed the discrepancies and turned him in.

Portra pleaded guilty to aggravated grand theft in October.

Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman says Portra spent the stolen money to maintain a lavish lifestyle and to pay off debts from a previous bankruptcy.
