It’s a roller coaster of an awards season in Hollywood.

Or, as presenter Kevin Spacey called it at the Producers Guild of America Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills on Sunday night, “awards hell week.”

Over the weekend, “American Hustle” was on top of the world, winning best ensemble prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles.

But Sunday at the producers’ awards, it finished behind “Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave,” which tied for best picture — the first such occurrence in the guild’s 25-year history.

Analysts at the Hollywood Reporter note that 17 of the 24 previous PGA winners — or 70.8 percent — went on to win the top Oscar, including each of the last six.

With only the Directors Guild and Writers Guild awards left to go in the next two weeks, the Oscar race is heading into the home stretch when Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters make their choices before the March 2 ceremony.
