School district embraces sustainability

San Francisco Unified School District is expanding its green practices district wide, including recycling and delivering organic foods to schools.

The board of education this week approved a resolution setting nine goals for sustainability in schools, including using environmentally-friendly janitorial supplies and waste reduction.

“What’s also really important about the resolution is that it encourages us all to think even more about ways in which we can be good environmental stewards and role models for our students,” said Nik Kaestner, sustainability director for the school district.

The efforts will be funded through grants and other resources, including support from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and the San Francisco Department of the Environment.
