School district committee to start talking cuts

There are several items on a school board committee’s agenda for Tuesday night, but the major discussion will likely be about what kinds of cuts the district will be considering in coming months.

Commissioner Sandra Lee Fewer said several departments in the district have been asked to make hypothetical slashes since the district is assuming an $83 million deficit over the next two years.

Fewer said she’s expecting some of those presentations to be made at the 5 p.m. augmented budget and services committee, which is meeting at 555 Franklin St.

That probably includes the idea of hacking summer school, among several other suggestions, Fewer said.

Commissioners will talk about whether they want to renew KIPP Bay Academy Charter School’s petition and grant one to another charter, too.

The augmented and budget services committee meeting falls right after the augmented curriculum and program committee meeting at 4 p.m., but budget talks are not on that agenda.
