School District celebrates Chinese immersion program

It’s been 25 years since the Chinese immersion program planted its roots at West Portal Elementary.

Since then, the first-of-a-kind language program has become so popular the San Francisco Unified School District recently opened its eighth Chinese immersion program and 21st language program overall -- at the newest school to host an immersion program students are taught a second language 80 percent of the time.

According to the district, the Board of Education is also working on a master plan to help every student graduate with proficiency in two languages in the future.

West Portal Elementary will mark its 25 years with a celebration to be held around 9 a.m. Friday at 5 Lenox Way at Taraval Street.
