Santa Clara sign will welcome 49ers

A modest sign in a Santa Clara parking lot will mark the spot where the 49ers plan to soon play.

The football franchise plans to relocate from Candlestick Park to an overflow parking lot of the Great America Theme Park in Santa Clara in time for the 2014 season.

Construction of a planned $937 million stadium has not started, but it was approved this month by Santa Clara voters.

On Tuesday evening, the Santa Clara City Council will consider a proposal to herald the coming stadium with a 16-foot-wide sign.

The sign, which will be 8 feet high and posted 8 feet above the ground at the future stadium site, is planned to say “FUTURE HOME OF THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS” and “49ERSNEWSTADIUM.COM” over a rendering of the planned stadium.
